Message from the Manager - October 2003

It has been an interesting start to the season with three consecutive defeats for the Wasps and two wins and a draw for the Hornets. I am however very pleased with the overall strength of the squad. Dave Smith and I have both got our eyes firmly fixed on competitive eleven-a-side football which is where the blood sweat and tears really start. Dave Smith has been on useful investigative missions watching Alex Francis's under 12 team playing their matches.

It may become confusing during the year as to some of my team selections but the aim of entering two teams into the Ellesmere Port League is to strengthen each and every player within the Squad. This can only be achieved if individual players are asked to strive for a higher level of performance AND EFFORT in order to achieve a victory. We enter every match with the intention of winning but I believe that a great deal more development is gained from a 2-1 victory than a 8-0 stroll in the park. I could be even more controversial and say that a 1-2 defeat is better than any kind of win if all the players selected have worked hard as a team , passed, moved and attempted or achieved skills within the game which previously they have not. I do know that the talent and commitment within the squad means that this could never be the case because when the players do perform at that level they will win the match.

I urge everyone, both players and parents to enjoy this season and enter into it with the same enthusiasm as the previous 2 (or is it 3).

The developing group of players who represent the Wasps in the Wirral League are as important as any of the squad. They have also had a tough start to the year and need encouragement more than anyone. Players must be patient and committed if this squad is to progress. I know that their performances will improve. This is their first season of competitive football and it is a real eye-opener. There is a hectic programme of fixtures ahead in the Wirral League and if they can achieve a level of consistent selection their performances will improve.

Again I can't stress enough that enthusiastic positive support from the touchlines will mean everything to this team. If however any player loses interest or finds the league too much then I urge the parents to talk to me as I have an extensive waiting bank of players who would relish the chance to play football with the Wasps. I do not want to see games where only 7 players or less turn up for the fixture. This would be discouraging for the players who attend week in and week out and it would also be discouraging for your coach, Tony.

I wish you all an enjoyable and successful season.
