Under 9's 25/05/05 – Wasps played Stork in The Under 9’s Knock Out Cup Final played at Whitby Sports and Social Club. This was a great occasion well supported by friends and family from the Wasps and Stork sides. The starting line up for the Wasps saw Chris Smith start in goal with Jack Ollerhead and Sam Ramsbottom taking places on the sidelines as subs. Both of these players were to play a significant part in this match as the game developed. The first half was a close fought affair with Wasps having the better chances and probably shading possession. However at the stroke of half time there was moments indecision between Harry Cross and Tom Parry and the stork striker stole in between them and managed to squeeze the ball past Chris Smith. Sam Ramsbottom was introduced for the second half freeing up Chris Smith to relieve Harry Cross who had run himself into the ground at the centre of the defence. Jack Ollerhead came on at right wingback for Chris Way. Jack settled into the match and then began to torment Stork down the right hand side. This pressure was rewarded with a goal for Jack with a long-range effort, which sailed over the Stork keeper and into the net. From then on Wasps looked like the only likely winners with Max Sedgwick giving the Stork defenders lots to think about. All the players performed tremendously well with a Captains performance from Tom Parry in the midfield and a solid performance from Matthew Westby on the left. It all had to be decided on penalties. Sam Ramsbottom despite suffering a throat infection pulled off a save that meant Wasps could win it. Matthew Westby strode up and buried the penalty for well-deserved Wasps win. May Day 2005 - West Kirby Wasps under 9s were asked to organise a tournament for the May Day Celebrations at Ashton Park. The event proved to be that popular that we could not accommodate all the teams that applied. The event was bigger than last year and the format changed. 12 teams took part, split into 2 leagues. The winners of each league progressed into the Champions League Final and the runners up of each league went through to the UEFA Cup Final. The event was very well organised by Dave Westby and went off without a hitch. Each league had 6 teams which resulted in 5 games for each team. All the players and parents had a very good day at West Kirby and the feedback that the Club received from every team was to say that they had enjoyed a friendly, competitive tournament and wished to be considered for any future event. The UEFA Cup Final was contested by 2 teams from Princes Villa FC. The Champions League Final was contested by Stork JFC and WK Wasps FC. It was a very close game that finished 1-1. The penalty shoot-out resulted in WASPS winning the competition. Medals were presented by the Lady Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Wirral.
23/04/05 -
Hornets v Stork Colts. Colts kicked off but were soon forced to defend.
Hornets' midfield dominated and with good team work and passing soon started to
create chances. McGowan opened the scoring with Whalley and Wynne following.
Stork struck back just before half time. Hornets kicked off and Whalley scored
with a powerful shot that gave the keeper no chance. Hornets hit the post twice
the bar twice and scored another five. On the day it seemed that every shot hit
the target un like last week. Colts scored another two well taken goals but
could not compete with a rampant Hornets team.
16/04/05 -
Wasps played Princes Villa away. Wasps Kicked off strongly getting a 5-0
lead over villa in the first and second period. Not so strong in the third
period drawing it 0-0. In the last in the last period Wasps came out strong and
scored two fantastic goals. The first one was amazing to watch A corner by Villa
was poorly taken and fell to the feet of Cross who passed it first time to
Parry. With great skill Parry passed it through to Sedgwick who finished it with
one touch. The final score 0-5 to Wasps.
14/04/05 -
Wasps played Ridgewood Rangers away. We kicked off at six o'clock
in the evening. I think we were all tired after school. Ridgewood piled on the
pressure straight away and got a corner by deflecting the ball off Crossy's
shin. The ball was floated into the back post, there was an unmarked
player and all he had to do was nod it into the goal and he did that fine.
Ridgewood scored again with a well taken volley. Wasps responded well to
the manager's half time talk and Parry pulled one back. Wasps went out in the
third quarter and to the managers delight scored three more goals. West Kirby's
fitness started to tell and Westby scored the final goal. A good team
performance with five different scorers. (Report by C Smith)
05/02/05 - Quarter Final of the knock out cup this weekend. West Kirby
Wasps v Ellesmere Port Jets at Whitby Sports Club Ellesmere Port. Wasps won the
toss and kicked off. The pace of the game was fast and players could not settle
on the ball, but wasps had territorial advantage and should have taken the lead.
Jets forced play into wasps half and a missed clearance gifted them a goal with
their only shot of the half. The second half started the same way as the first
with Jets getting behind the ball well and frustrating Wasps attacking play.
Sedgwick went close with a rasping shot that hit the post. It looked like it was
going to be one of those days when Parry struck a power driver into the roof of
the net. The game finished 1-1 at full time. It then went into extra time where
the golden goal rule applies. Wasps had the ball in the back of the net only to
see it disallowed. Jets seemed to tire in the second period of extra time with
Wasps piling on the pressure. Sedgwick stabbed the ball in to score the winning
goal. Wasps through to the Semi Finals. This was an exciting game. Jets played
extremely well and are a very well organised side but on the day Wasps deserved
the win.
29/01/05 -
Wasps played
Overpool FC at home. Wasps started well and took the lead early in the first
period. Overpool never really looked like scoring and Wasps won each period with
goals from Sedgwick, Parry, Westby and T O'Neill. This was a good team
performance with some good passing and very well taken goals.
Hornets v Ellesmere Port Jets. This was a game that
neither side deserved to win, Jets competitive but not creating many chances,
Hornets unable to break down jets defence when all the opposition seemed to get
behind the ball. Two gifted goals gave the visitors the win. This was a very
disjointed performance from Hornets who can play much better as a team.
23/01/05 -
Due to a water logged pitch
Wasps game was played at home on Sunday against
Vicars Cross. Against the run of play Wasps conceded a goal from a well taken
corner. Vicars Cross defended well but could not stop Wasps scoring four times.
Hornets played Ellesmere Port on Saturday at
Greenbank, Hornets started very strongly and dominated play for the first two
quarters and led with two well taken goals from Whalley. Ellesmere came back
very strongly in the third quarter and scored a well deserved goal. This made
for a very exciting final period, Hornets regained the initiative and won the
game. The game was well refereed and enjoyed by both teams and parents alike.
15/01/05 - West Kirby Wasps had a
training match with Castrol JFC. Wasps used 13
players drawn from the squad and included two players who played their first
match for the club. Wasps started strong and created enough chances to win the
game in the first period. Castrol took advantage of the changes made and scored
twice. A good strike and goal from O'Neill brought Wasps back into the game but
a late goal (OG) gave the visitors the win. This game was a pre league run out
for all the squad with both coaches learning a lot from the game.
Hornet's had a return fixture with St Georges Lions FC. Hornets started
well and went in front with a blistering drive that flew into the net. Lions
played well but could not get through a competitive Hornets mid field. As the
game progressed Hornets use of the pitch told with good passing sequences
resulting in goals. A hat-trick from Whalley, a brace for McGowan and goals from
Lee, Casey and Wynne sealed the win to the home side.
06/11/04 - Wasps at home against Stork Youth. Wasps started very brightly and had all the invention and ideas but squandered their chances to take the lead. Sedgwick put wasps ahead early in the second quarter only to see their good work undone when Stork equalised. Wasps lost their direction in the third quarter and conceded another goal. A good passing move early in the final quarter resulted in Ollerhead being put through to score. This is what Wasps needed and where very unlucky not to grab a victory. In the end a draw seemed the correct result. Hornets where away at Vauxhall Motors. No evidence of any hang over from the previous cup game, With Hornets really buzzing, a hat trick from McGowan and goals from Whalley and Griffiths the result was never in any doubt. Another good team performance.
23/10/04 -
Wasps played away at Vauxhall on a wet pitch, this cost the first goal as
the keeper lost his footing leaving a tap in on the line for Vauxhall. Wasps
recovered their composure and Wynne equalised with a powerful drive from out
side the box. The game was evenly balanced with wasps playing the better
football and having better possession when Ollerhead stole in on the far post to
put Wasps ahead. That is how the game finished with another win on the Road for
Wasps. Hornets crashed out of the cup to a
very strong New Scene Team. New Scene won each of the quarters but Hornets
showed good character and deserved the consolation goal late on.
03/10/04 - Two Ellesmere Port League fixture results. Wasps away to Wirral Eagles, a good solid performance with wasps GK man of the match and a brace of goals from Sedgwick. Hornets at home to AFC Waverton. Griffiths made his debut for the club with a faultless performance. Hornets took the lead three times with a hat-trick from McGowan only to be pegged back by a very good Waverton side, with Waverton equalising in the last thirty seconds of time.
18/09/04 - On the weekend of the 18th the teams played in friendlies against Accrington Stanley FC, as a consequence of winning the Blackburn Rovers Festival of Football two years running. Games were played in the morning and in the afternoon there were free tickets to the Blackburn Rovers v Portsmouth Premiership game. It was an excellent day, enjoyed by players and parents alike.
